In November, Stradbroke Primary Academy’s new Eco Team was invited to the Town Hall in Great Yarmouth for a fun-filled, educational day involving different activities, planting trees, and raising awareness of the environment and sustainability.

The six Eco Warriors, Vyla May, Henry, Louie, Jack, Dulcie-Leigh and Emiliana (one student represented each year group from 1 to 6) first met the Mayor in the Town Hall before crossing over to the South Quay. After learning about the micro-environment of a tree and the importance of sustaining our forests and woodland and supporting the local wildlife, the pupils had the opportunity to plant their own tree as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

A nationwide initiative created to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Queen’s Green Canopy is a tree planting drive which invites everyone across the UK to plant trees. Its aim is to create a network of individual trees, avenues, copses and whole woodlands in honour of The Queen's service and build a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate.

After the tree planting the Eco Warriors had the opportunity to be creative! With wood from a sliced fir tree trunk, the pupils created some sustainable Christmas tree decorations to add to their own Christmas trees at home. The day culminated in a sustainable themed treasure hunt around the town hall, and a meeting with some exciting tree people.

Overall, all the pupils had a great afternoon and were able to return to school knowing that they had contributed to help create a nicer environment for us all to enjoy in the future, as well as learning more about the environment and our personal responsibility in sustaining healthy forests and woodlands.
